Darkest days in New Zealand

Terrorism in New Zealand

The Christchurch mosque shootings were two consecutive terrorist mass shootings at the Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 15 March 2019.  At least 50 people were attack killed in a massive shooting.   Prime Minister Ardern called the incident an "act of extreme and unprecedented violence", said " this is one of New Zealand's darkest days" and raised the national terrorism threat level to the highest level.   Politicians and world leaders also condemned the attacks.

New Zealand is a multiculturally integrated society that welcomes refugees and immigrants.  And respect the right of everyone to conduct faith activities in peace.  The suspect Tarrant a self-described fascist and white supremacist, he shows the " white power" gesture in the court, which means racial discrimination.  In his great replacement manifesto "To most of all show the invaders that our lands will never be their lands, our homelands are our own and that, as long as a white man still lives, they will never conquer our lands and they will never replace our people."   The manifesto expresses his far right, white supremacist, anti-immigrant intent hateful and violence ideology is regretful.

The unexpected violence comes from prejudice, tragedy caused by people's opposition, mutual incomprehension and misunderstanding, and irrational prejudice.  We must work hard to create a space for rational dialogue, reduce prejudice and discrimination.  Teach our next generation to eliminate the prejudice of the previous generation let us fight for a society with peace, hope and security.

Terrorists have been spreading and fanning their ideological messages through the mass media, and advances in the Internet have made their communication become much easier.  Instead of making us more rational, social media and the Internet have become more radical.  The live broadcast of the violence contains bloody content and should take more measures to restrict it.  People should stop watch and spread when they see the relevant events.  Don’t let the media platform become a tool to promote their radicalism.  To avoid tragedies, we all have a responsibility to fight against Internet extremism and the spread of criminal films.

Love and Peace
